What would you say if we told you that Federal Express dropped off a single 3-1/2 inch disk in the morning and, by that afternoon, picked up 450 pages like the ones shown here-with text, tables, icons, and six full 4-color photos on each page? And an index, too!

The page being built on the left from a catalogue by Resort Condominiums International (RCI), an international resort timeshare exchange service. The catalogue contains a listing on each property in the RCI database. The database is stored and maintained on an IBM mainframe.

The RCI catalogue has three listings on a page. Each listing has an exterior and an interior photo, a description of the resort, and tables showing all the amenities at the resort. Exterior photos are a mix of horizontal and vertical formats. The layout of each listing depends on it's position on the page and whether it appears on a left- or right-hand page. and its position on the page. Previous versions of the catalogue were produced using traditional typesetting and manual paste-up methods and took about a month to produce.

Omegatype's approach was to design an XTension for Quark XPress that reads the database and determines the position for each listing on the spread. It then generates the pages with all elements in place. The XTension even figures out which photos go in which boxes and places them in their correct positions. The result is a standard XPress document, which is then sent to a color separator for output to film. The entire catalogue---of more than 450 4-color pages---was generated in about two hours!
