Many companies have information they would like to publish as catalogs, directory listings, or other types of documents. There are many advantages to data-driven publishing:

  • A high level of automation is possible when the information to be published is in an electronic database.
  • The time-to-publish is highly compressed so the production date is moved closer to the printing date. This gives the publisher more time to sell ads, negotiate prices with suppliers, and improve the accuracy of the data.
  • Costs are dramatically reduced because the information from the database does not have to be checked every time it is placed on a page. In addition, indexes and tables can be generated automatically and are guaranteed to be accurate.
  • Data can be updated on a continuing basis independent of the production of printed or electronic documents.
  • It's easy to create special-purpose catalogues which contain subsets of the data. Since generating documents is automated, it is economically feasible to prepare catalogs for special occasions or tailored to target audiences such as trade shows or high-volume customers.

Once the database has been created multi-purposing becomes a reality. The same database can be used to drive the page makeup process and also be used to create Web pages and CD-ROMs.
